MERMAIDS! MERMAIDS! MERMAIDS!
I love Mermaids! I got a free copy of Lights of Lorelei by author Jen Mink, man to give an honest review. This is the sequel to Sounds of Sirens and you can read my review of that book here. |
There is no light without shadow,
no truth without sacrifice,
and no way to keep us all from harm.
Aska wants more out of life than being a temple girl in the St. Brandan Convent of Brandaris. Her life-long service to the Baeles-Weards is the only reason she wasn’t killed immediately after birth – she is atoning for the sins of her parents. Her Anglian mother and Skylger father were never supposed to love each other and have children, and Aska is reminded of her low status and illegitimacy by her fellow temple girls every day.
But then she meets Tjalling, a young, mysterious, and charming Skylger fisherman who doesn’t seem to care that he is not supposed to befriend her. Soon after they meet, the island falls prey to the largest Siren attack in the history of Skylge and Aska is beginning to doubt the wisdom of the priests. If the Light in the Tower really keeps the people from harm, why are the Shriekers taking more and more lives each day?
Adding to her inner turmoil is a secret meeting with Royce and Enna, who want to recruit her into their resistance movement, an unexpected confession from her best friend Melinda, and Aska’s realization that she likes Tjalling a bit too much for her own good.
Soon, she is going down a road there is no turning back from, forcing her to make choices that shake the foundations of her world.
For Aska, there is only one true choice – to bring the truth to light.
My Review:
Light Of Lorelei by Jen Minkman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars ***I received this copy from the author for an honest review.*** I previously gave Sounds of Sirens (Book 1 in the Tales of Skylge Trilogy) three stars/platypires. I liked the story enough but had a few issues with it. The author had contacted me asking me if I would read the sequel. Honestly, I was kinda hesitant. We've all heard of the sophomore slump and I was worried I was not gonna like it. *sigh of relief "Lights of Lorelei" is really read good and I am really glad I got to read it. This time around the main character and the storyline changed. We meet Aska a girl stuck living in a temple for life due to her circumstances surrounding her birth. So she's stuck living a life kinda like a nun but really she wants more from life. Seriously, who wouldn't? Well she meets a boy, Tjalling, and of course things start to change. Yay! What I liked about the second more than the first book is that we get some answers. The story flowed a lot better. I actually had moments where I could not put the book down. Also there are MERMAIDS! Yes, they are featured quite a bit and more of their mythology is explain. Without giving away spoilers, characters from the first book do make an appearance and both books tie in together really well. I can't wait to read the final book. I would recommend this series for those who want to read something different in the YA dystopian and YA mermaid genre. Book 1 Review of Sounds of Sirens on the Platypire Blog. View all my reviews |
